Jim Gillespie – Chairman of the Institute of Domestic Energy Assessors

Jim Gillespie This website is the brainchild of The Institute of Domestic Energy Assessors (IDEA) and is available to ALL industry members, not just IDEA members, FREE of CHARGE.

IDEA is a not for profit organisation and corporate affiliate members of The Institute of Continuing Professional Development, who in turn is part of the Continuing Professional Development Foundation, an educational charitable trust providing high-quality and broad-ranging CPD since 1981. The Institute serves the public interest by helping to raise the effectiveness of professionals through the promotion of CPD as an important and integral element of lifelong learning.

Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are relatively new to the UK and are now mandatory as part of an EU directive to combat climate change. This new industry of energy assessment for the built environment has sprung up very quickly and it became apparent to me very early on that there was both confusion and a lack of consistency within our fledgling industry as to exactly what was expected of accredited energy assessors to satisfy the ongoing CPD requirements of the various accreditation schemes. This website has therefore been created, with input from both the participating accreditation schemes and the Department for Central and Local Government to ensure as best we can that energy assessors and home inspectors have a common CPD platform to use which clearly outlines the CPD requirements expected of them.

The commitment to keeping up to date is growing in significance as more and more people recognise the benefits of adopting a planned and structured approach to post-qualification learning. Life long learning was best described by acclaimed author, Stephen R Covey in his best selling book '7 habits of highly effective people' as 'sharpening the saw'.

Commitment to CPD is also an acknowledgement that becoming professionally qualified is not an end in itself - it is merely the beginning. Updating skills and knowledge on a continuing basis is essential to career progression, particularly given the new opportunities becoming available to our members in the non domestic market as well as the prospect of an 'Energy Adviser' qualification being made available in future, exclusively for accredited energy assessors which will enable them to give advice to consumers and end users in respect to the recommendations outlined within the EPC's.

This website is just one example of the many benefits that IDEA can offer both energy assessors and home inspectors and I would urge you all to join IDEA and help us achieve our primary objective which is to improve the professional standing of our members.
