frequently asked questions – CPD Register

Question

I am recording my CPD activity for my accreditation scheme - do I have to duplicate this for this scheme?

Answer

No. The new scheme and online tool is designed to keep the recording of CPD as simple as possible. As long as your CPD meets the requirement of your current accreditation scheme that is the main priority. You can use this online service to record this, or download our forms and continue to keep paper records if you prefer.

Question

I haven't been able to record my CPD recently because I have just changed jobs and have been too busy to go on courses or attend institute training days. What can I do?

Answer

When you change jobs you are constantly learning and developing. The new learning can be used as a basis for your CPD. CPD is not always about going on 'courses' and there is a comprehensive range of potential ways in which you can plan activity to ensure you are enhancing competence and developing professionally. These will vary slightly from one accreditation scheme to another so it's best you check with them as to what does and doesn't count as far as they are concerned.

Question

I already use an online recording system/I don't have access to the internet

Answer

Use of the CPD Register online planning and recording tool is not compulsory. It has been designed to make the process of CPD as easy as possible for those who choose to use it. Submission of alternative logs is fine provided it is still accepted by your current accreditation scheme. There is also a paper version of the log available for those people who wish use it.

Question

How can I determine the time to record for attendance at events such as exhibitions or conferences for CPD purposes?

Answer

The first thing to do is speak with the organisers to determine what hours they would deem acceptable to record. If this isn't feasible then discuss it with your accreditation scheme and record the time they agree with you.

Question

Are there any checks on organisations which claim their events count towards CPD?

Answer

The accreditation schemes and training providers on this site will recognise the CPD events of alternative providers, including any events run by the IDEA training academy. However, it is always best practice to discuss any CPD training or events with your current accreditation scheme if you are in any doubt

Question

Why are there different CPD requirements from one accreditation scheme to the next?

Answer

Currently there are different CPD requirements from one accreditation scheme to the next but we are hoping that this will change as more commonality between the schemes is achieved, both through inter accreditation scheme discussion and with all party initiatives such as this website. All participating accreditation schemes on this website clearly state the CPD requirements for their members to work to.

Question

If I accumulate more than the necessary CPD hours in a year can I carry them forward?

Answer

No. Development activity has to be current and relevant to changing needs and requirements.

Question

How much CPD activity do I need to do if I work on a part-time basis?

Answer

The CPD requirements for part-time and full-time workers are the same. The key requirement is to maintain competence and ensure knowledge is up-to-date at all times. In addition, IDEA actively encourages further professional development which may or may not be related to your current role.
